SAMTRAC for Mining

Pre-requisites:

  1. A minimum of 6 months exposure to / experience in the Mining Industry
  2. Completion of the following two NOSA courses:

    • Applying SHE Principles & Procedures for Mining (covers the Mine Health and Safety Act as well as general mining technicalities) - presented by Jan Hoffmeyer on 23 & 24 July 2009; and
    • Introduction to SAMTRAC

Course overview:

  • Practically orientated with case studies drawn directly from the mining industry.
  • Covers prominent safety issues, including legislation, liability, Mine Health and Safety Act, DME Guidelines, NEMA.
  • Deals with technical safety management issues such as mining practices, site and construction planning, premises and housekeeping, symbolic safety signs, hand and moveable power tools, lifting equipment, ladders, scaffolds, vessels under pressure, gas cylinders, electrical safety, lockout systems, labeling of switches, isolators and valves, fire prevention, safeguarding and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Focuses on occupational health and hygiene management including illumination, noise, vibration, basic principles of toxicology, hazardous chemical substances, biological agents, thermal conditions, ventilation and indoor air quality, radiation, ergonomics, health risk assessment, occupational health service, medical surveillance, primary health care, environmental management.
  • SHEQ management systems are also dealt with, i.e. planning and implementation, process mapping, drafting policies, procedures and work instructions, hazard identification and risk assessment.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Health and Safety, a worldwide recognised health and safety qualification focuses on internationally recognised health and safety standards and priorities (ILO/18001) and best practice controlling hazards. It offers an excellent basic grounding in the essentials of health and safety.
